Program Director Update for 6/28/2008 Run

Hello Tampa Galloway Runners!

It is Wednesday and we are heading downhill to the weekend now.  We would like to remind everyone this Saturday to bring in your gently used running shoes (clean and odorless please) to be collected by Joan Simon.  She is collecting them for the migrant workers who are very appreciative of these shoes.  They may have seen too many miles for running but still have some good use in them.  Thank you in advance.

Well, it is June in Florida and that means heat, heat, heat.  We need to protect ourselves during these hot days so as not to become afflicted with the dreaded heat diseases.  We already try to run during the coolest time of the day for our long runs, but you may not be able to do that during the week.  Keep drinking the water and electrolyte drinks, avoid too much caffeine and alcohol, and don’t increase your duration or intensity.  You should be slowing down and take more walk breaks especially if you are heating up.  Here is a little something you can try.  Freeze a water bottle that is only half-filled with water.  When you get ready to run, fill the rest of the bottle with water or electrolyte drink.  Take a neckerchief with you and wrap it around the bottle while you are running.  During you walk break when you are taking a few sips, place the neckerchief on your neck to cool you during that minute.  Wrap it around the bottle again for the run and repeat.  If ever you feel you are getting overheated, stop running, pour the water over you head and go home.  It is always wise to run with a cell phone, especially if you are miles from home.  Road ID is also a wise choice.

Darla will be putting out the water coolers this weekend.  Thanks Darla.  If you find that you need additional hydration for the long run, carry a water bottle or wear a belt with the water bottle or bottles attached.  You can find a lot of nice running supplies at the Running Center on Dale Mabry.  Don’t forget that they give Galloway Members a 10% discount.  So when you get ready to check out tell them you are a Galloway Runner.  You can also find running gear on our website at www.tampa262.com.  Just click on the link for Road ID or Amazon to access what you need.

Well, keep hydrating and stay healthy.  We will see you at 5:50 AM on Saturday in the school parking lot behind the library.  You know the place.  Have a great rest of the week and hope that you find your happy pace!

Linda and Iris
